THE TITANIC

Titanic was named the “Millionaires’ Special”, “The Wonder Ship”, “The Unsinkable”, “The Last World of Luxury” and was supposed to be part of 3 liners to ply the Southampton-New York “shuttle” service. The sister ships were called Olympic and Britannic and all three were supposed to be nearly identical.

Titanic was to become the biggest and most luxurious ship of her day. With her double hull and 16 “watertight” compartments, she was deemed “unsinkable”.

It was the first ocean liner to have a swimming pool and a gym; it also had 4 elevators, 3 for first class and 1 for second class. It was the first ship to have an elevator for second class.

Built at the cost of $7.5 million (in 1912) the Titanic had 9 decks (as tall as an 11storey building), was 882.9 feet long and 92.5 feet wide. It weighed 46,328 tons. 4 funnels were built though only 3 were used; the stern funnel was used as a ventilator. The funnels were so big that 2 trains could go through it.

There were 29 boilers each weighing nearly a 100 tons and the Titanic had a great triple toned whistle, the largest ever built.

The ship burn 690 tons of coal per day. For the maiden voyage, workers loaded 5,892 tons of coal aboard the ship.

Here are some of the facts that gave Titanic the nickname, “A Floating Palace”.
